This lavishly produced hardback illuminated book is a treasure trove of beauty, whimsy, wisdom and joy. Every page invites you to slow down and really examine the timeless messages in the hand formed words, tiny illustrations and decorative motifs.
The language of the King James Bible lends itself well to a more contemplative pace of reading and, combined with a script that is clear but not quick to read, encourages the viewer to spend time with the words and therefore with the God that inspired them. I particularly enjoyed the mediaeval and Celtic inspired touches that are interspersed throughout each page, they elevate the already beautifully scribed book into a delightful visual experience that is filled with life and celebration of the message.
Many illustrations reflect the words and give a lovely, whimsical commentary, look out for the frolicking colts, the sparrows perching on words, the ten virgins and the pecking chickens! The remaining decorations are simply playful ways of filling spaces but they serve to make the reader pause rather than speed through the familiar words, in the same way the change of colour for significant names and memorable passages draw you into a closer interaction with the Gospel by offering a stimulating visual experience.
This version of the Gospel of Matthew is one that invites the reader to really slow down and contemplate the meaning of the words that familiarity may have dulled, we are invited to view them through the eyes of a skilled artist who truly enjoys sharing her love of God in her vibrant and beautiful work.
