The Art of Writing: Spirituality, Prayer and Calligraphy

Monday 10 November 2025

7.00pm to 8.30pm, Weston Room, The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral

For centuries the art of calligraphy has been used in the production of sacred texts and devotional works.

In the lead up to Advent, join the Dean of Norwich in an exploration of this ancient art bringing together spirituality and writing in conversation with three exponents of the craft:

  • Lady Susan Bacon – artist and sculptor who has created and published her own contemporary Book of Hours re-imagining this devotional tradition
  • Jane Sullivan – whose beautiful hand-written and illustrated copies of the Gospels are being published by Cambridge University Press
  • The Revd Tim Weatherstone – who regularly uses calligraphy as an expression of personal prayer

This is an opportunity to discover more about spirituality, art and prayer and how it can aid our own devotional practice.

There is no cost for this event, but please let the Dean’s PA William Falconer if you will be attending:

Copies of the Gospels and other beautiful hand-written books will be on sale.
